I'm colouring my hair Purple to raise funds and awareness for the prevention of child sexual abuse this Bravehearts Day, Wednesday 30th August!
As a Child and Adolescent Sexual Assault Counsellor with Centacare SW NSW, raising awareness and preventing child sexual abuse is something I am very passionate about.
Child sexual abuse is a community issue (it’s everyone’s business) and it is up to each and everyone of us to empower and protect our children and eradicate and abolish the cultures of silencing, enabling, shame and suffering.
Approximately 1 in 5 children will experience child sexual abuse1.
Approximately 1 in 3 cases of child sexual abuse are instigated by other young people2.
In at least 90% of child sexual abuse cases, the offender is known to the family3.
A child aged 0-9 years is approximately 40 times more likely to be the victim of sexual abuse than of kidnapping or abduction4.
In more than half of cases (approximately 52%), the onset of child sexual abuse is from 0 to 8 years5.
